Sefil düşünceler ve küçüklükler arasında kaybolup, hayattaki büyük sırrı çözemedik, soru da cevapsız ve acımasız kalakaldı: Nasıl yaÅŸadın, neden öyle yaÅŸadın, neyi yapabilecekken yapmadın, baÅŸka bir yol, baÅŸka bir anlam arıyordun, yanlış zilleri, yanlış kapıları çaldın, yanlış yollara saptın, yanlış insanları sevdin, yanlış yataklarda uyudun, yanlış evlerde yaÅŸadın. Neden hayal ettiklerini, düşündüklerini bu kadar küçümsüyorsun?…

Steam Ships to Jet Boats

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

Yes, it’s getting tough on this holiday. Another day another lake each with a local claim: the longest, the deepest, the most beautiful. Each day another means of water transport a vintage steam ship in Queenstown, a motor vessel to cruise the fiords of Milford Sound and today a Jet Boat down the river at Te Anau to Lake Manapouri.

And the weather, sunshine and tee shirts on our way from Queenstown to Te Anau on Friday followed yesterday by rain starting with a light drizzle that developed into a teaming storm on our trip to Milford Sound. There was so much rain that waterfalls emerged everywhere and we could hardly see the snow-capped mountains. It was touch and go whether the Milford Sound cruise would proceed. It did and by the time we reached the Tasman Sea it was sunshine again. And the scenery at Milford Sound was so bad we only took 168 photos.

After the Jet Boat ride today there was nothing to do, so Adrian bought a fishing license. It took longer to buy the licence than to catch a fish. On his second cast he landed a tiddler (a 54cm rainbow trout). And then we had to eat the bloody thing. Not sure whether we can put up with this much longer.

Darfur: UN Situation Report

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

From the United Nations Country Team in Sudan - also via Sudan Watch

North Darfur:

Despite the overall decline of violence in Darfur since the signing of the DPA, due to the reduction in clashes between the Government and SLA forces, banditry, rape, cattle rustling and targeted attacks on INGO compounds and UN convoys, as well as the African Union, continue to pose a threat to peace. During the reporting period, North Darfur was particularly restive, witnessing the spectacular abduction of six IOM staff by the SLM/A-Wahid in Irgue, 50km West of Kutum. The concerned staff were released after a day, following the joint intervention of the UN and AU. In addition, on 14 June, an AMIS patrol was detained for several hours by the SLM/A-Wahid in Kaguro, 43km Southeast of Kebkabiya. The group cited non-acceptance of the DPA as their general grievance. Furthermore, they requested the AU to obtain express permission from the SLM/A leadership in El-Fasher, before undertaking any further patrols.

This week also saw renewed inter-SLM/A fighting in Kulkul and Korma on 12 and 13 June, respectively. Although the fighting in Kulkul, currently under the control of SLM/A-Wahid, was instigated by the SLM/A-Minawi, the incidents in Korma appear to have been sparked by a SLM/A-Wahid offensive, probably in a bid to regain lost territory. No details of the latter attack, or the number of casualties, are currently known. UNMIS will continue to encourage and support AMIS in the implementation of its mandate, including resuming its vital operations around the Kalma, Abou Shouk and Zalingei camps.

For the first time since his most recent detention, UNMIS gained access to SLM/A stalwart, Suleiman Jamous, on 15 June. During his meeting with Mr. Minawi on 16 June, SRSG Pronk discussed Mr. Jamous’ Release for the purposes of obtaining medical treatment. Mr. Minawi promised to free Jamous, through the UN.

West Darfur:

In West Darfur, two UN guards were shot and wounded in Geneina and Garsila. A NGO car was also hijacked in broad daylight just north of Geneina. Furthermore, NGO staff have come under threat from IDPs in Hassa Hissa camp (Zalingei), forcing them to minimize their activities. General insecurity in the Geneina IDP camps has forced the humanitarian community to set up new safety procedures; and the camps themselves have become a potential hotbed for violence. There are fears that worsening insecurity for the IDPs, particularly after the signing of the DPA, could have a deleterious effect on its implementation.

South Darfur:

In South Darfur, clashes were reported between the Rezigat in Ed Daein and the Misseriya tribe in South Kordofan, over the sharing land and water points. This resulted in 200 Rezigats households fleeing to an area south of Ed Daein locality.

On a more positive note, reports were received of returns to villages that were attacked in previous months. Inhabitants of Dito (5,200 people, attacked on 22 April) and Joghana (27,000 people, attacked on 23 April), were said to be returning to their villages. OCHA was also informed that some 9,000 Gimir IDPs in Kass were willing to return to their villages of origin, if some basic humanitarian services were made available.

Death Row, Jacko and Another “Juice”

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

How about our legal system? CourtTV and CNN are having plenty to talk about lately as Scott Peterson found out he will be put to death. (Well deserving in my opinion.) The Jacko saga continued and I’m really flip flopping on who is telling the truth in that case. It will be interesting to watch more of it unfold. Lastly, another celeb gets away with murder. What a shocker huh? (sarcasm)

I’m a piece of sh*t and I don’t care.

If you didn’t hear already, Robert Blake (some old actor I never even heard of until he was on trial) got off on murder chargers - shooting his wife. First OJ and now Blake. It’s looking good for Michael. If Peterson was a celeb, than my money would of gone on him for being set free as well. The Atlanta shooting guy, well he won’t get off because he is not a CELEB. See the pattern here? Robert Blake just looks like a crazy ass “west coast killa” (you need to know Snoop’s rap song to get that joke).

I told you I would get away with it. I’m an actor!
I can act innocent and you will believe my performance.

I guess it doesn’t matter what I think. I just hope I don’t run into Blake or The Juice out because I’m not sure what way I rather be murdered - bullet to the brain or a decapitation. Hmm, it’s a toss up although the bullet does sound more appealing. At least Jacko would only molest me, but let me live after.

Laura Bush: Democrats, Media Should Be Careful Of Sexism Aimed At Governor Sarah Palin

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

First lady Laura Bush said today that sexism aimed at Sarah Palin is a very real prospect and suggested Democrats watch what they say about the Alaska governor and John McCain’s ticketmate.

“The other side will have to be particularly careful,” Bush said in an interview on Fox News from St. Paul, “because that’s something we all looked at.”

Questioned about whether Palin may face sexism from the media in the way Hillary Rodham Clinton supporters claim she did, Bush said: “I think that’s a possibility.”

The first lady expressed pride in Palin.

“I’m going to get what I wanted, which is to be able to vote for a Republican woman,” Bush said. “People, as they get to know her, are going to be so impressed with her grit and her sensible judgment. She has shown how terrific women can be, and how strong women can be, in office.”

Forum: Global warming science or fallacy?

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

From this piece:

Should significant economic policies be based on unsubstantiated projections obtained from inadequate computer climate models? Models that attempt to reduce all of the physical, chemical and biologic processes of Mother Nature to a set of mathematical equations. Arrogant? Presumptuous? Fallacious?

The fallacy of man-made global warming facilitates the ideal scare campaign for those seeking government intervention, global governance and an increase in global authority and control over energy. Control of energy is control of the economy, capital investment, the free market and wealth creation. Government intervention results in increased government dependence, taxation, income redistribution and socialism.

In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “When we are directed from Washington when and where to sow, and when and where to reap, we should soon want bread.”

She is just too cool…

[vinnomot] Saudi Covert Action in Iraq? More Cash Action

Saudi Covert Action in Iraq? More Cash Action

A Covert action program can be defined as a multi-layered operation, usually performed by a defence or intelligence organisation, which is planned and executed to conceal the identity of the sponsoring country, person or agency or permit plausible denial by them.

Cleared works by ex CIA officers have provided most of the information on covert action. Judging by William J. Daugherty’s book Executive Secrets, (2004) most programs are fairly mundane, for example financial subsidies for “pro-democracy” or “regime change” information campaigns etc, rather than being of the “lethal action” violent overthrow type.

It could be that Saudi Arabia’s chief covert action specialist Prince Turki al-Faisal (see below) who returned to Saudi Arabia 8 months ago, is quietly leading a Saudi covert action campaign in Iraq. The campaign may centre on Saudi money routed through US agencies to counter al Qaeda insurgents and Shiite domination. The results may now be more evident.

Nawaf Obaid, a noted former security adviser to the Saudi Embassy Washington, stated in an article in the Washington Post November 29, 2006 that:
“…the Saudi leadership is preparing to substantially revise its Iraq policy.
[Saudi] Options now include providing Sunni military leaders (primarily ex-Baathist members of the former Iraqi officer corps, who make up the backbone of the insurgency) with the same types of assistance — funding, arms and logistical support — that Iran has been giving to Shiite armed groups for years.”
Obaid was later sacked for writing the article. Openly fighting fellow Muslims is not the Saudi way. Quietly providing money for “worthy causes” eg. for insurgents to fight Shiites may now be the Saudi way. Money is far more deniable than weapons or otheer aid - particularly if the US financial/banking surveillance system is on your side.

Prince Turki’s Covert Action Past

A previous Saudi covert action program was conducted in the 1980s on a large scale to fund and arm Afghan insurgents and foreign jihadists. According to Steve Coll’s Ghost Wars this system worked by Saudi funding matching US funding dollar for dollar and relying on the CIA and Pakistan’s ISI to decide what to do with it. Total funding was in the $billions over the course of the war. The aim was to fight and expel occupying Soviet forces in Afghanistan. Many of the foreign jihadists were led by Osama bin Laden and formed the core of what would become al Qaeda in the 1990s. The film Charlie Wilson’s War outlines some of this activity.

The Saudi contribution was under the close leadership of Prince Turki al-Faisal (then head of Al Mukhabarat Al A’amah or General Intelligence Directorate (GID)) . After 18 years heading GID Prince Turki was appointed Saudi Ambassador to Britain and later Ambassador to the US.
On December 12, 2006 Prince Turki abruptly resigned his post as Saudi Ambassador to the US. The reasons are unclear, however, if the Saudis want to enhance any covert action program in Iraq (as Obaid mentioned before being sacked) or against Iran they will need the covert action expert (Prince Turki) at home.

On March 29 2007 Prince Turki was reported as again being active in one of his ongoing interests - Board Chairman of King Faisal Research and Islamic Studies Centre. The Centre is obviously vast and well funded yet as former head of Saudi intelligence and former Saudi Ambassador to the US Prince Turki is seemingly over-qualified to be a university president or Vive-Chancellor. However it may provide him with excellent COVER to (without suspicion) meet Muslim scholars and leaders, travel anywhere in the Muslim world and dispense money to needy Iraqi religious and educational institutions and charities etc and perhaps fund the newly prominent Sunni “tribal” fighters.

If the Saudi’s do have a covert program in Iraq it is likely to be non-confrontational, loosely structured and informal. Very different from Western or Russian examples. It may not necessarily be a GID activity. The GID was Prince Turki’s personal feifdom for almost 20 years - as is the Saudi custom. If he has reconstituted many of the Saudi money distribution practices and personal networks that went into the 1980’s anti Soviet insurgency Prince Turki is serving Saudi interests well. If this it not under the GID umbrella it is more deniable.
The Saudi program may only become more formalised when it interfaces with US covert programs in Iraq.
It is difficult to be certain that the Saudi’s are working with the US. However if the progam in 1980’s Afghanistan is anything to go by:
- the Saudis, perhaps through Prince Turki, may be handing over sums of money to the US (say CIA or DIA).
- This money would then be disbursed to the Sunni (so-called) “tribal chiefs” as an inducement and a means to fight al Qaeda in Iraq. News reports that show these tribal fighters working in cooperation with US forces suggests that for the tribes not only a change of heart, but money, may be talking.
- This program may have been arranged by US Defense Secretary Robert Gates (ex CIA and a covert action strategist) who may well have been in touch with Prince Turki since the 1980’s, when both were intelligence chiefs.
The underlying reason for a Saudi money to US program may be the US asking the Saudi’s “if you bare some of the financial burden of the insurgency we won’t pull out quickly and leave you exposed to a Shiite dominated Iraq and Iran”. Hence Saudi self interest and US coercive encouragement dovetail.
